It’s so hard to get out of bed

It’s so hard to get out of bed
There is a particular mental space in which an avalanche made up of an accumulation of uncontainable feelings and complex circumstances which creates the sensation that life is configured as a slippery staircase with fragile steps, where one clings to the handrails despite a growing premonition that resonates, like an ever-deafening tinnitus, insisting that everything would be easier if one simply goes off the rails.
Amongst the internal voices negotiating how much life is worth holding on to, and whether it would indeed be easier to surrender to gravity, the bed functions as a plateau, a kind of double-edged checkpoint. In the right context, it can offer the necessary rest to replenish one’s strength and continue holding on; at other times, however, it is merely a mirage of recovery. It can induce a kind of fusion between body, bed and sheets, fostering mental rumination and endless conversations between different fragments of the self, which emerge as characters immersed in an intense debate of intrusive thoughts, strategically directed towards identifying ways of letting go in the quietest and most efficient manner possible.
From a very young age, I was aware of the bed’s ambiguous nature. During one of the most acute periods of my depression as a teenager, when I was fixated on imagining ways of leaving quietly and giving up everything, the bed and the notion of rest became my greatest enemies. At that time, my parents and I discovered a popular bedroom design in which a pull-out wooden bed remained hidden beneath a raised platform that housed a desk. Not seeing the bed or mattress immediately opened up the possibility of conceiving the room as a space for imagination and work. In this way, my own personal refuge ultimately came to be organised around work and writing at that desk (…)

It’s so difficult to get up from bed, sometimes.
Everything feels so empty, so much anxiety from each hour, that they transpire
and how they will occur.
It terrifies us, it’s like we’re about to fall into a hole.
But this time we don’t want to fall. Just to avoid that moment.
Having to jump.
We don’t know where sadness comes from, but it’s something deep,
we don’t want to get out of bed, we watch kitten videos so we can get up.
We drank coffee to see if something moved us and gave us the will to
stand up.
Yesterday, at the funfair, we wanted to die, really die.
We wondered if people noticed. We talked to my mother and she told us
we sounded so calm, and it took so much to get up.
It’s not that we miss something or someone, it’s just sadness,
without tears, not wanting to do anything,
yesterday we tried to smile so nobody would notice.
We’re uncomfortable, uncomfortable with the clothes that brush
against our body, with the socks, with our hair, with the shape of us, uncomfortable
with the music, the headphones, uncomfortable with
the weather, with the shoes, with the irritation in our eyes.
Sometimes sadness kills us. We want our heart taken from us,
it hurts us, it burns us, we can’t stand it.
